Fall is fading into winter. Lots of changes are happening on the farm...and there is excitement in the air! Join us in December before winter break and the holidays for exciting one-day programs for ages 6-12 afterschool! Programs meet 4:00-5:30pm unless otherwise noted.
Explore, create, make friends, and feel the excitement and changes happening all around as we get ready for winter!
There’s nothing like food prepared from the garden, except for when you work with others around an outdoor brick oven or propane stove to create these flavors. Children will work with our farm health coach and educator to prepare recipes, which may include various fall crops as they become ready throughout the season, flatbreads, soups, baked goods, rice bowls, chips, and more. Children will also learn how to prepare foods safely and healthfully.
Children will learn different primitive techniques for building shelters in the woods and then put those techniques to use as they build their own versions out of branches, vines, reeds, leaves, and more.
Children will explore the nighttime wonders of the farm, from owls and other nocturnal creatures to the moon and stars in the near-winter sky.
Being on Holly Hill Farm means being surrounded by holly trees. And when you think of wreaths, it is hard to imagine them without holly leaves and berries, as well as pine boughs and cones and other decorations. Children will learn how to use these materials to make beautiful wreaths for the winter months.
Using natural materials, children will make a variety of crafts that they can give as gifts for the holidays or other special days. Crafts may include: ornaments, string art, games, toys, knickknacks, and more.
Not only are the animals getting ready for the winter, but so are the local fairies and gnomes. Children will help build cozy homes for these creatures, as well as other magical beings and cryptids.
Children will use written and visual clues provided in the form of riddles to find the elusive, gnome-like creature, the Tomtem, who watches over the animals on and off the farm. Flickering lights around the farm, fields, and woods will draw them toward each clue.
