Derek’s is a voice that recalls the classic songwriters of the 1970’s. Obvious comparisons to Cat Stevens, Van Morrison and James Taylor come easily, but in addition, he brings an alternative sound reminding one of Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy or Sufjan Stevens.
Born among the cornfields of the Great Plains of Nebraska, Derek began playing and writing songs after receiving his first guitar in 1986. Since then, he has travelled widely in the lower 48 playing his original songs and favorite cover versions for audiences from California to New York.
As of 2022 he has called Massachusetts his home .Derek performs a busy schedule schedule with shows from Provincetown to Salem and all along the South Shore.

As Boston's Country 102.5 FM said, “Birch Swart is like a living variety- pack. All the flavors live within this one talented musician.
You can open a can of indie folk, pop, reggae, rock, blues or country flavors in this six pack..."
