Farm Animals

 Ages 3-5

Ages 6-8

9:00-12:00

Our farm animals always find ways to have fun and stay warm in the winter. But what warms them the most is having children visit and help take care of them. And there are many other animals to discover in the habitats around us, playing in the frosty air or simply looking for food. The joy of these visits and the discovery of scurrying, bounding, flitting, and soaring wildlife (or the tracks they left behind) will fill this winter morning at the farm. Children will also listen to stories, play games, and take home a project to remember their experience.

Art in Winter

 Ages 8 - 13

9:00-12:00

Nature is full of beauty, awe, and inspiration, even without the bright colors of spring and summer and the blazing leaves of fall. Children during this program will explore ways to recognize and capture the magical beauty of winter through different media and styles, playing art games, and discovering natural objects along trails and lacy patterns of ice hanging over moving water, not to mention the light and shadow made by leafless trees and winter sun. They may replicate this beauty or imagine it in new ways. By the end of the session, each child will have at least one piece of art to bring home with them.

Winter in the Woods

 Ages 3-5

9:00-12:00

Though the leaves have long fallen and many creatures have migrated or are in hibernation, the winter woods are still alive with sounds, sights, smells, and textures that will thrill children as they explore the many trails surrounding the farm, crossing brooks and marshes and passing other fascinating areas. Children will also listen to stories, play winter games, have boat races in the icy stream, and take home a project to remember their experience.

Adventure in Winter

 Ages 9 - 13

Children will explore the secret areas around the farm, including the woods, meadows, and Ice Pond. The outing will open their eyes to new places and possibilities as they learn to navigate, observe, and create within the winter setting. They will use written and visual clues, maps, and compasses to discover locations, gathering new clues that will lead them to a final destination. Winter games will also be interspersed between the different clues.

Compost Creatures

 Ages 3-5

9:00-12:00

Though the winter may freeze the soil, there are still tiny creatures busy at work. Children will have fun learning about these little critters that turn garbage into 'gold,' nurturing our soil, and helping our crops to grow. They will dig in and sift through looking for life, eyes wide with amazement with each discovery and even by the heat that these decomposers create as they work. And not only is this life in the farm’s compost piles but also in the woods. Children will also listen to stories, play winter games, and take home a project to remember their experience.

Magical Creatures

Ages 6-8

9:00-12:00

Not only are many of the animals out and about during the winter, but so are the local fairies and gnomes. Children will explore the farm, woods, and meadows in search of traces of these elusive and magical creatures. Maybe they will find footprints, a home, or even catch a glimpse of one skipping or flitting through the trees. Then children will build cozy homes for the magical creatures that live closer to them. Children will also listen to stories, play winter games, and take home a project to remember their experience.

Cooking in Winter

 Ages 9-13

9:00-12:00

There’s nothing like warm food on a winter day, except for when you work with others around an outdoor brick oven or propane stove to create these flavors. Recipes may include winter crops and various root vegetables, flatbreads, soups, baked goods, homemade syrups and teas, and more. Children will also learn how to prepare foods safely and heathfully.

Syrup & Teas

 Ages 3-5, 9:00 -12:00

  Ages 6-8,   9:00 -12:00

Ages 9-13, 9:00 -12:00

When you think of farming, children may only think of the fruits and vegetables that grow close to the ground and not the tall, quiet trees of surrounding forests. Children will soon discover how sap (or even bark) from some of these trees is turned into sweet syrup and the needles and bark of other trees make a soothing tea, all knowledge passed down by the indigenous people that first lived on these lands. During this day, children will learn the process of maple sugaring and making teas, harvesting, boiling, and tasting throughout. They will also listen to stories, play winter games, and take home a project to remember their experience.
