Is your child looking forward to meeting new friends at summer camp this year? Kids at Holly Hill Farm’s popular camp programs definitely make new friends, but not all of them are human. Some are wild creatures like salamanders, worms, toads or turtles, and some are furry farm residents like rabbits, horses, goats, chickens, and a very outgoing donkey named Benji.
The wildlife and farm animals are just part of what sets the one or two-week camp programs at Holly Hill apart. Another aspect is less tangible but arguably more important: through farming, exploration and outdoor adventures, the programs seek to connect children to the natural world in a way that will stick with them for life. It’s increasingly welcome in an era where many kids spend more time on their electronic devices than in their own back yards.
Connecting kids to nature is a lofty goal, but for the campers, it’s a blast. Is there a better summer experience than getting dirty making compost, or watching sunflowers that you’ve planted grow tall, or getting on a first name basis with the friendliest goats you’ll ever meet? Kids at farm camp hike through salt marshes and historic growing fields to study vernal pools in the woods. Campers who participate in the cooking programs eat nourishing meals with herbs and vegetables from the very gardens that they’ve been tending. And older campers cultivate a food-to-pantry vegetable garden that helps to feed hungry South Shore families at food pantries in Cohasset, Hull and Quincy.
